Holmes Going To Kona!

NL Triathletes Jeff Holmes, Melanie Rose and Rob Dunn completed Ironman Canada yesterday in blazingly hot conditions. Cory Tetford now living in Dartmouth also crossed the line to become an Ironman.

Melanie finished in 16 hours 45 minutes and 36 seconds, Cory in 13:47:35, Rob in 12:11:22, and Jeff aced the race in 10:17:28 finishing 95th overall, 7th in the 45-49 age group, and qualifying for the Kona Hawaii Ironman World Championships!

Congrats to all finishers and good luck to Jeff as he competes with the best in the world this October.

Torbay Tri Results

The season-ender Torbay Tri For Health ran Sunday with exceptional weather and a solid field of 84 athletes competing in ideal conditions.

Shawn Stratton captured first place in the Sprint event with Katherine MacBay taking first for the ladies. The shorter distance Tri-A-Tri event was won by Juan Acevedo with Ulrike Zuschlag first lady. Lisa Wakeham, Keith Wakeham and Mike O'Keefe won the Team event.

In this its second year the event has achieved 92% of its fundraising goal raising over $28,000 for mental health care in the province. For event pictures, compliments of Derek Galway, click HERE.

Strong Showing By TriNL Canada Games Development Team

The Gander Tri on Sunday August 21 marked a great starting point for the Development Team which will be representing Newfoundland and Labrador at the Sherbrook 2013 Canada Games in Quebec.

The success of the 10 members was evident as they swept the male division placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall, with a strong 2nd place female overall finish.

Friday and Saturday leading up to the event the team participated in a training camp designed to introduce them to all aspects of the sport.Their hard work and dedication paid off with their great race day results.

Triathlon Comp Intro Part 2 Course

TriNL is pleased to welcome back Triathlon Canada Facilitator Tracey Shelley. Tracey will be leading a 2 day Triathlon Comp Intro Part 2 Course on Saturday Septemeber 24, 1pm-9pm and Sunday September 25, 10am-5pm. The course will be taking place at the Courtyard Marriot Hotel and the Mews Center in St.John's.

Please note the following PRE-REQUISITES for this course (your NCCP CC# will be required for registration):
  • Successful completion of NCCP Triathlon Competition Coaching Course Part 1
  • Portfolio Part 1 submitted, evaluated and approved at least three (3) weeks prior to course
  • Successful completion of Making Ethical Decisions - Online Evaluation

Torbay Tri This Sunday

The Torbay Tri For Health is this Sunday August 28 starting 8am at Whiteway's Pond off the Bauline Line. If you haven't yet done so you can VISIT HERE to register online until Thursday 6pm.

And if you're not planning to participate please consider volunteering! There are many jobs available, you'll get an excellent vantage point to take in the race, and your help will be greatly appreciated!

Finally Nice Tri Weather!

Sunday saw 25 degree temperatures, sunny skies and no wind as Marty Whelan and Caroline McIlroy ran to victory at the Gander Triathlon!

Marty edged out last year's winner Jordan Baird by just 2 seconds for the win, while Caroline had a solid first place female finish. 65 athletes enjoyed ideal conditions and the warm hospitality of the race committee and countless volunteers.

Gander & Torbay Coming Up

Summer is finally here and just in time to close out our triathlon season in Gander and Torbay!

The Gander Sprint Triathlon is 9am this Sunday August 21 and you can REGISTER ONLINE until Friday 6pm. If you miss the online deadline you can still register in person at race kit pickup 6:30-8pm Saturday at St.Paul's School on McGee Road.

And our season will wind up with the Torbay Tri For Health next Sunday August 28 featuring a Sprint Distance event as well as a shorter distance Tri-A-Tri event. REGISTER ONLINE until 6pm Thursday August 25.

Torbay Tri For Health Season Closer

There are fewer than 50 sports left for the August 28 Torbay Tri for Health so REGISTER NOW to be there for the final TriNL event of the season. Register by August 15 to ensure you get the new great looking long sleeve shirt and expanded race kit.

Changes this year include chip timing and an adjustment to the placement of the buoys for a true Olympic Sprint Distance event (750m swim, 20k bike, 5km run).

And although this is a fund-raiser for Mental Health Care, if you don’t feel like raising money you can simply make a $100 donation yourself and get a $100 tax receipt.

Gander Tri Next Weekend

The 2011 Subway Gander Triathlon is the next big race on the summer schedule set for Sunday August 21.

Youth is the order of the day this year as Gander will host the 2013 Canada Games Development Camp Athletes. These young athletes will be taking advantage of the FREE registration for the Under 20 age category. Last year's winner Jordan Baird is back to defend his title as well as Emily Mcllroy who will be trying to make it two wins in a row after her great sprint victory in St. John's.

Open Water Swim Series Starts Wednesday

The Splash 'n Dash Open Water Swim Series returns to Octagon Pond again this year with 4 swims over 4 weeks starting tomorrow Wednesday August 10.

Swim starts 6pm each Wednesday evening for the next 4 weeks and choose your distance of either 750m or 1500m.

St.John's Triathlon "Toughest Ever"

The St.John's Triathlon ran Sunday morning in spite of cool, choppy waters, high winds, steady drizzle and rain, and temperatures not much more than single digits. 133 hard core triathletes showed up for the 8am start which was delayed 20 minutes as organizers scrambled to secure the swim buoys which were blowing around the pond. In the words of Gerry Donovan who has completed the event for 27 consecutive years "These were the toughest conditions I've ever seen!"

Ryan Brown was first in 2 hours 25 minutes 41 seconds for the Standard Distance race which included a 1k swim in Healy's Pond, 2 laps around Windsor Lake for 46k on the bike, and a 10.6k run through the Sunshine Camp trails and along Bennett's Road. Tyler Cole was second in 2:28:02 with George Colbert taking third in 2:30:58.

The Ladies Standard Distance race went to Michelle Young in 2:38:44 followed by Caroline McIlroy in 2:44:04 and Kristy Hynes in 2:58:05.

The Sprint Distance race, half the standard distances, was won by Jordan Baird in 1:04:47 followed by Shawn Stratton in 1:11:22 and Marty Whelan in 1:11:41. Emily McIlroy was first in the Ladies Sprint Distance in 1:26:51 with Sherry Grewal second in 1:32:28 and Joanne Hunt third in 1:35:02.

St.John's Tri Gonna Be Damp

The never-ending rain, drizzle and fog won't dampen the enthusiasm of the 172 athletes signed up for Sunday's St.John's Triathlon.

Race Kit Pick-up is Saturday afternoon from 2-5pm at Capital Subaru Kenmount Road. And race day begins at 6:15am with Athlete Check-in THE TENT next to the Chalet at the Sunshine Camp. Olympic race starts 8am followed by the Sprint at 8:20am.

This year the Awards Ceremony is onsite in THE TENT with a catered BBQ by Breen's Deli starting 11:30am followed by the Awards at 12:30pm.

Gander Training Camp For Tri Team NL

TriNL is hosting a Training Camp in Gander August 19-21 for young triathletes or those wishing to enter the sport.

This camp is designed to help with the selection of Triathlon Team NL for the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke Quebec, and will include participation in the August 21 Gander Sprint Triathlon.

If you know any athletes born between January 1 1993 and December 31 1997 with an interest in competing, and preferably with a background in swimming, biking or running, please contact christiane@splashndash.ca for more information.

Record Registration For KOS


The Capital Subaru St.John's Kids of Steel is Regatta Day and registration numbers have grown to an all-time high with 250 kids expected to participate.

ONLINE REGISTRATION is open until 6pm tonight Tuesday August 2, Race Kit Pick-up is tonight from 7-9pm at Capital Subaru Kenmount Road, Athlete Check-in is Regatta Day 8am in Bowring Park by the pool with races beginning 9am.
