For the first time Triathlon will be a sport at the NL Summer Games. The 2020 Games will be hosted by Bay Roberts in August with triathlon competition taking place between the 15th and 18th.
The NL Games competition will provide excellent experience for young triathletes training to be selected to represent the province in triathlon at the Canada Summer Games in 2021. Participation in the competition will be a key ingredient in team selection, and offers opportunities for athletes from across the province to be recognized.
Regional teams will compete in two events: Individual Sprint, and Mixed Relay. Up to three junior men and junior women (junior covers ages 16-19) will represent each region and all will be eligible to compete in the sprint event.
The mixed relay event consists of four relay legs, each one being a super-sprint length event (250m swim, 6km bike, 1.5km run) with each relay team member completing a super-sprint and then handing off to the next team member. A mixed relay team consists of two men and two women from the regional team. Each team will include a coach and manager.
Triathlon NL must now begin identifying and preparing athletes, coaches, and managers from across the province for the competition. Where necessary, regional competitions will be held to select team members. As the first step in this process, Triathlon NL is looking for individuals to serve as regional representatives for team development. If you would like to be involved in supporting Triathlon’s entry into the NL Summer Games, as a regional representative or in any capacity, please contact Triathlon NL at admin@nulltrinl.com.
