Triathlon NL Update

Dear NL Triathlon Community,

I want to provide an update and check-in with you all as we navigate these difficult times with COVID-19 and the public health emergency. TriNL is continuing to work with the Triathlon Canada Nation and public health officials to determine what the upcoming triathlon season will look like.

We wanted to let you all know that the 2020 World Triathlon Grand Final in Edmonton will not take place in 2020. While we understand this comes as a great disappointment to many of you who worked hard to qualify and are training for this, we completely support Triathlon Canada and public health officials in this decision. You can find Triathlon Canada’s statement here: https://www.triathloncanada.com/edmonton-grand-final-to-not-take-place-in-2020/

We do not know if there will be any outdoor races in the 2020 season, but the Triathlon Canada Nation wants to help all our members to keep active and connect with each other online. This includes a virtual racing series put off by Triathlon Canada: https://www.triathloncanada.com/triathlon-canada-launches-virtual-race-series-waives-national-bodys-annual-membership-fees-during-pandemic/

Triathlon NL is continuing to function under the new normal. On April 5th we held our AGM digitally and elected a new board of directors. We would like to welcome Kim Larouche, Sherry Grewal, and Jason Pretty to the board of directors. We also had three members who stepped off the board of directors this year: Rob Gamberg, Christiane Martin, and Pat Collins, who have dedicated many years to the board of directors and coached our Canada Games teams. Thank-you all.

We know that many of you are feeling a huge sense of disappointment, many of our A races have been cancelled or changed. It is completely normal to grieve these cancellations, as many of you have sacrificed a lot for training. It is also important to remember that performance goals are not the only reason we do triathlon, it is also about health goals and the friendships we build along the way. So reach out to each other and talk about the disappointments of this race season and talk about future goals.

While we do not have an update at this time on the local racing season, we want to encourage you all to stay safe, listen to the public health officials in NL, wash your hands, maintain physical distance and be kind to each other. https://www.gov.nl.ca/covid-19/

We also want to let you know that although the NL Triathlon Community may be physically distant right now, our community is strong and we will continue to support each other online until we meet at the start line.

Stay safe and positive,

Amy Henderson
